Apple Thought $5.7 Billion Was the Worst of It, but Taction Disagrees

Back in September, Apple was ordered to pay $5.7 billion in damages to a company called Taction Technology over alleged patent infringements. Now, even for a company as big as Apple, $5.7 billion is still a significant amount. But it turns out that Apple might have to pay more even after the billion-dollar patent verdict.

According to a report from Reuters, it seems that Taction Technology believes it is owed more than just the $5.7 billion in damages in its Apple patent verdict. The company claims that the initial amount covers sales from 2021 to March 2026. And now, they want compensation for about six more months of sales that was not included in the initial calculation.

They’re also seeking interest on the damages at an annual rate of 7%. The company is also asking for interest to continue accumulating after the court enters its final judgement right up until Apple pays. They’re not stopping there either. In addition to the interest, Taction wants it to extend to future sales.

The company wants Apple to pay royalties on devices using the alleged infringed patents until they expire on September 24, 2035. Ultimately, this could cost Apple way more than the $5.7 billion initially awarded to Taction.

Not quite a win yet

Unsurprisingly, Apple isn’t too thrilled with the damages it has been ordered to pay. The company claims that its Taptic Engine is fundamentally different from Taction’s technology. They are also challenging the jury’s award, claiming that the evidence did not justify the $5.7 billion calculation. To that end, Apple said it plans to appeal.

Now, whether or not Apple’s appeal is successful remains to be seen. However, like we said, given the amount, Apple will most likely try its best to either reduce the amount or not pay the damages completely.
