Ledger's $899 Atom Looks Like an Android Phone but Is Built for Crypto Users
Ledger SAS, the Paris-based French company that manufactures popular hardware wallets for cryptocurrency, is launching the Android-based ‘Atom’ device. While it resembles a phone, it is designed to be used alongside one. The device targets users seeking extra protection for their digital assets, crypto transactions, and online activity.
Ledger Atom runs on both Android OS and Ledger OS
This comes in association with Solana Mobile, which announced Ledger as its first hardware expansion partner, bringing its Solana ecosystem to the Ledger Atom. The new device will come with Solana Mobile’s Seeker app preinstalled. This combines the Solana dApp Store, which offers access to more than 1,500 apps, and the Solana Wallet in one place. The Ledger Atom runs on both Android OS and Ledger OS, with the latter operating on a separate secure chip to protect crypto transactions.
Two Atom users can send encrypted messages like regular messaging apps. However, the recipient’s device decrypts them inside Ledger OS. Ledger has also partnered with OpenClaw to let AI agents handle financial tasks without full access to digital wallets. Users must physically approve transactions to complete them.
Looks like an Android phone
While the Ledger Atom looks like an Android phone, it is not here to replace one. The company recognized that it was unlikely to compete with top Android handsets in terms of cameras and other specs. On the hardware front, the device does have some limitations. It has a 6.77-inch OLED display, but the refresh rate is 60Hz only. It runs on a Qualcomm Dragonwing chip instead of a Snapdragon. Also, it packs just a 4,000mAh battery and a single rear camera.
However, the Atom will reportedly receive five years of Android OS updates and at least seven years of spare parts support. That includes a user-replaceable battery. The Ledger Atom gets a physical privacy switch that completely cuts power to the camera and microphone.
The Atom will be up for grabs from summer 2027. You can reserve now with a refundable deposit of $100 to secure a Founder’s Edition device for $849. The price will go up to $899 after the launch.
Physical anti-tampering measures
The launch of Ledger Atom comes amid reports of hardware tampering. The company confirmed reports that at least one hardware signer sold by a reseller contained “an unauthorized hardware implant,” which read users’ 24-word recovery phrases and transmitted them via eSIM. This led Ledger to pause sales across Southeast Asia and at German retailer MediaMarkt. According to reports, the incident led to over $86 million in crypto losses, but Ledger hasn’t confirmed the number.
Well, the company says the Atom includes physical anti-tampering measures, which it claims would have blocked the screen reader implants that were involved in the recent incident. These include a protective enclosure around the Secure Element, MCU, and FPGA, detection systems for display and back-cover removal, and packaging that’s designed to show signs of tampering.
