Samsung ordered to pay $15.1 Million fine over Galaxy S22 gaming

Samsung has been officially fined as part of its lawsuit revolving around the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21, and Galaxy Tab S8, following complaints that Samsung had misrepresented the gaming performance of those devices.

South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission has imposed a fine on Samsung of 20 Billion Korean Won, which is equal to about $15.1 Million in USD. The main issue that led to this fine is that Samsung had place limiters on its CPU and GPU inside of those three devices, while marketing them as the ultimate mobile gaming devices. Only, the experiences had by gamers was not the ultimate mobile gaming experience. The limiters, which were activated by the Game Optimizing Service that Samsung was using in those devices, would slow down the CPU and GPU during more intense gaming sessions as a means of keeping the device at optimal temperatures.

In other words, the Game Optimizing Service was throttling the CPU and GPU during these times. However, after the GOS kicked in, gamers had started complaining about their devices freezing, games lagging, and decreased graphics quality, none of which lives up to Samsung’s claim of these devices being the ultimate experience for mobile gaming.

Samsung plans to appeal the fine in the Galaxy S22 gaming lawsuit

Samsung has confirmed that it plans to appeal the fines. It’s arguing that the Game Optimizing Service was a necessary implementation to ensure that its phones and tablets were running at optimal performance and safe temperatures.

The company is calling it a safety feature. However, South Korea’s FTC still argues that Samsung should have disclosed that information, regardless of the reasons for implementing the service. Instead, Samsung chose to withhold that information from the consumers, and the FTC thinks that this prevent consumers from making more informed buying decisions.

At this time there is no listed date for when Samsung has to pay the fine.
