Your YouTube Muscle Memory Is About to Break: Subscriptions Is Leaving the Bottom Bar

AH YouTube Premium

For the longest time ever, if you watched YouTube on your phone, you know that the YouTube Subscriptions feature is at the bottom bar of the app. We imagine that for most people, it has become muscle memory. But now it looks like Google wants us to retrain that muscle memory.

YouTube shifts Subscriptions from bottom bar to the top

According to a recent post on the YouTube Help page, Google is making some changes to the app’s layout. For the most part, it isn’t a night-and-day kind of difference, but there are some tweaks that could affect the way you use the app. One of those changes is where YouTube decided to move the Subscriptions tab from the bottom bar to the top.

This is part of YouTube’s feeds across the top of the Home tab. According to YouTube, “We’re introducing new standard feeds across the top of your Home tab, including Live, Music, and Movies & TV (for viewers with active subscriptions), so you can dive straight into the formats you’re looking for with one tap.”

As a result, Subscriptions has also been moved. YouTube is taking it one step further by shortening it to “Subs.” So, if you can’t find what you’re looking for, it’s now located at the top with a slightly shortened name. We imagine that eventually we’ll get used to these changes. But in the meantime, it’s going to be slightly annoying.

What else is changing

Now, we previously mentioned that this change is part of YouTube’s feeds. In addition to shifting subscriptions to the top, YouTube will now let users build custom feeds. This is done via AI where you can enter a prompt that describes what you want to see. If you’re not a fan of the YouTube algorithm, or maybe you want to shake things up, you can.

As it stands, YouTube will allow users to save up to three active custom feeds. However, if you’re a YouTube Premium subscriber, you can save up to eight. These feeds will also sync across devices. If you created a feed on mobile, it’ll show up on desktop too. Just make sure that both devices are signed into the same Google account.
